Many merchants want to charge a small handling fee when a customer chooses the cash on delivery payment method, to cover the extra cost of collecting payment on delivery. PickupBird by Digiloop does not have a separate "cash on delivery surcharge" field — instead, you build the surcharge into a dedicated Shopify shipping rate.
How It Works
In addition to your normal shipping rate, you need to create a second, separate shipping rate, building the cash-on-delivery handling cost into both its price and its name. This way, when a customer selects this shipping rate, they knowingly accept the extra cost and automatically pay the surcharge as part of the shipping cost.
Step 1 — Create a Separate Shipping Rate That Already Includes the Surcharge
In the Shopify admin, open the Shipping and delivery submenu under Settings.
Under Shipping profiles, open the shipping profile you want to use.The General profile is the default in Shopify.
In the appropriate zone, add the new cash-on-delivery surcharge shipping rate by clicking + Add shipping option.
In the pop-up window, name the rate so that the surcharge is visible to the customer, for example: "Cash on Delivery (+500 HUF)".
Set the price to the normal shipping cost plus the cash-on-delivery handling fee.
Save the rate by clicking Done.
Important: to keep customers accurately informed, the surcharge must appear simultaneously in both the rate's price and its name.
Step 2 — Assign the Cash on Delivery Surcharge Shipping Rate to a Shipping Provider
In the Shopify admin, open the PickupBird by Digiloop app and go to the Shipping zones and rates menu.
Select the Pickup points tab.
In the list that appears, you can set the appropriate shipping rate separately for each provider, on the left side.
On the right-hand panel, find the zone for which you created the cash-on-delivery surcharge shipping rate.
Click the dropdown field and add the shipping rate marked with cash on delivery alongside the existing shipping rate.
Repeat this for every zone and provider for which you created a cash-on-delivery surcharge shipping rate.
Save your changes by clicking Save.
Step 3 — Configure the Payment Customization Tab
In the Shopify admin, open the PickupBird by Digiloop app and go to the Payment settings menu.
Click the Payment customization tab.
In the list that appears, you need to specify separately for each shipping rate whether only the cash-on-delivery payment option should appear, or whether it should be hidden.
For shipping rates that include a cash-on-delivery surcharge, select only the Cash on Delivery payment method from the dropdown list.
For normal shipping rates, select all available payment options from the dropdown list except the Cash on Delivery payment method.
Save your changes by clicking Save.
